Marika-Alderton House
Project type
Architectural Analysis & Technical Documentation
Date
1994 (original construction) / 2024 (drawing completed by student)
Location
Yirrkala, Eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia
Originally designed by Glenn Murcutt for Banduk Marika and her family, the Marika-Alderton House is a climate-responsive home located in Yirrkala, Eastern Arnhem Land. The design reflects Murcutt’s philosophy of working with nature, incorporating lightweight materials, natural ventilation, and elevated structures to respond to the tropical environment of Northern Australia.
This technical drawing exercise focuses on understanding how architecture can be both contextually sensitive and structurally efficient. Through the production of orthographic drawings and a physical model, I explored the construction logic of the house, from joinery details to material layering. Emphasis was placed on Murcutt’s use of timber and steel, and the modular, repeatable systems that make the home adaptable and sustainable in its cultural and environmental context.
